In this article, we’ll take you behind the scenes to discover the fascinating histories of some of our most remarkable finds. From a Victorian writing desk once owned by a famous Montreal poet to a mid-century modern dining set that furnished a local restaurant for decades, these pieces have stories you won’t believe. We’ll reveal how a hand-carved armoire survived three generations of a French-Canadian family, and how an industrial cabinet was transformed into a stunning entertainment center perfect for today’s modern apartments. Whether you’re shopping for affordable sectionals, elegant sofas, or unique accent pieces, each item at EconoMeuble has a story waiting to be continued in your home.
The Victorian Writing Desk
Our Victorian writing desk has become something of a legend among Montreal furniture enthusiasts. We discovered this magnificent piece during an estate sale in Westmount last spring. The family selling it had kept it tucked away in their attic for nearly 30 years, forgotten among old boxes and holiday decorations. When our team first spotted it beneath a dusty sheet, we knew we had found something extraordinary.
Dating back to the 1880s Victorian era, this writing desk was originally crafted for a prominent Montreal businessman to manage his correspondence and accounts.
While today we might search for “computer desks for sale” or “affordable home office furniture,” Victorian families invested in these desks as symbols of status and practical workstations before the era of laptops and sofas with built-in USB ports.
The craftsmanship details make this piece truly remarkable. Constructed from solid mahogany with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring Montreal’s native maple leaves, the desk showcases the attention to detail that’s often missing in today’s mass-produced furniture.
The journey to EconoMeuble wasn’t simple. After careful extraction from the attic, our restoration team spent over 40 hours gently cleaning and restoring the desk’s finish without compromising its patina and character. We replaced the felt lining in the drawers but preserved the handwritten notes we found inside—including a shopping list from 1923 and a receipt for a dining table and chairs. Unlike mass-produced cheap furniture found online, this desk represents Montreal craftsmanship at its finest—a heritage piece that costs less than many new desks while offering incomparable quality and character you simply won’t find in modern furniture stores.
